چکیده

The stochastic optimal control uses the differential equation of Bellman and its solution—the Bellman function. We show how the homonym function in harmonic analysis is (and how it is not) the same stochastic optimal control Bellman function. Then we present several creatures from Bellman’s Zoo: a function that proves the inverse Hölder inequality, as well as several other harmonic analysis Bellman functions and their corresponding Bellman PDE’s. Finally we translate the approach of Burkholder to the language of “our” Bellman function. The goal of this paper is almost entirely methodological: we relate the ideas to each other, rather than presenting the new ones.

Bellman Function and the H 1 − BMO Duality

The emergence in the past decade of the Bellman function method as a powerful and versatile harmonic analysis technique has been characterized by rapid theoretical development on the one hand and somewhat ad hoc, if effective, approaches to some problems on the other. From the groundbreaking applications in [NTV1, NT, NTV2], which put the method on the map, to the concerted effort at tracing it...

Control Theory and Economic Policy Optimization: The Origin, Achievements and the Fading Optimism from a Historical Standpoint

Economists were interested in economic stabilization policies as early as the 1930’s but the formal applications of stability theory from the classical control theory to economic analysis appeared in the early 1950’s when a number of control engineers actively collaborated with economists on economic stability and feedback mechanisms. The theory of optimal control resulting from the contributio...

Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equations and the Optimal Control of Stochastic Systems

In many applications (engineering, management, economy) one is led to control problems for stochastic systems : more precisely the state of the system is assumed to be described by the solution of stochastic differential equations and the control enters the coefficients of the equation. Using the dynamic programming principle E. Bellman [6] explained why, at least heuristically, the optimal cos...

Analysis of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations arising in stochastic singular control

We study the partial differential equation max {Lu− f,H(Du)} = 0 where u is the unknown function, L is a second-order elliptic operator, f is a given smooth function and H is a convex function. This is a model equation for HamiltonJacobi-Bellman equations arising in stochastic singular control. We establish the existence of a unique viscosity solution of the Dirichlet problem that has a Hölder ...

Dynamic Harmonic Modeling and Analysis of VSC-HVDC Systems

Harmonics have become an important issue in modern power systems. The widespread penetration of non-linear loads to emerging power systems has turned power quality analysis into an important operation issue under both steady state and transient conditions. This paper employs a Dynamic Harmonic Domain (DHD) based framework for dynamic harmonic analysis of VSC-HVDC systems. These systems are wide...
